First Dance Steps

Fancy trying out some line dancing but worried you won’t know the moves? Well, we’ve included the dance steps below for one of our favourite beginner level dances called ‘California Freeze’ – a 4 wall 24 count dance, with no tags or re-starts.

We’ve got two different songs that the Prairie Dogs dance this too – the slower version is ‘Baby When You’re Gone’ by Bryan Adams featuring Melanie C, and a faster version ‘Rockin Robin’ by Lolly. If this is your first time though, we recommend the first track – though the demo we’ve used on the link is to a classic Drifters’ number, so take your pick!

Steps:

RIGHT AND LEFT VINE WITH HITCH
1-2 Step right foot to right side, cross left behind right
3-4 Step right foot to right side, hitch
5-6 Step left foot to left side, cross right behind left
7-8 Step left foot to left side, hitch

STEP, HITCH, STEP, HITCH, 3 STEPS BACK, HITCH
1-2 Right foot step forward, hitch
3-4 Left foot step forward, hitch
5-6 Right foot step back, left foot step back
7-8 Right foot step back, hitch

HIP BUMPS (LEFT x2, RIGHT x2, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT), HITCH WITH A ¼ TURN LEFT
1-2 Left foot step forward (bumping left hip forward), left hip bump forward
3-4 Right hip bump back, right hip bump back
5-6 Left hip bump forward once, right hip bump back once
7-8 Left hip bump forward once, hitch while making a ¼ turn to the left

REPEAT

And then there’s the ever popular Stroll Along Cha Cha – a 4 wall 32 count dance, again with no tags or re-starts. We dance it to a number of songs with differing tempos – ‘Light My Fire’ (Will Young), ‘Here Comes The Rain’ (Mavericks), ‘Dancing’ (Kylie) or ‘Something In Your Eyes’ (Steps)

Steps:

ROCK, RECOVER, CHA-CHA-CHA
1-2 Cross/rock left over right, recover onto right
3&4 Step left in place, step right in place, step left in place
ROCK, RECOVER, CHA-CHA-CHA
5-6 Cross/rock right over left, recover on to the left
7&8 Step right in place, step left in place, step right in place

CROSSING WEAVE RIGHT, ROCK, RECOVER, CHA-CHA-CHA
9-10 Cross left over right, step right to side
11-12 Cross left behind right, step right to side
13-14 Cross/rock left over right, recover onto right
15&16 Step left in place, step right in place, step left in place

CROSSING WEAVE LEFT, ROCK, RECOVER, CHA-CHA-CHA
17-18 Cross right over left, step left to side
19-20 Cross right behind left, step left to side
21-22 Cross/rock right over left, recover onto left
23&24 Step right in place, step left in place, step right in place

RIGHT TURN OR “STEP ½ TURN RIGHT”, CHA-CHA-CHA
25-26 Step left forward, turn ½ right (weight to right)
27&28 Step left in place, step right in place, step left in place
LEFT TURN OR “STEP ¼ TURN LEFT”, CHA-CHA-CHA
29-30 Step right forward, turn ¼ left (weight to left)
